The health of Jamaica’s economy depends on how the different sectors respond and adapt to what is being described as the new normal. Stalwarts in the manufacturing, tourism, finance sectors made their recommendations during the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, digital conference, crossing the chasm, the road to economic recovery.
The economic impact of the Coronavirus has cut deep. In just four months, the country’s economy appears to be crippled by the very measures that were established to control the spread of the virus. The tourism industry which is the country’s main foreign exchange driver and a major source of employment is being battered by the coronavirus.
According to the Tourism Ministry, over 350-thousand people depend on the industry. But with just a handful of visitors arriving since the borders reopened on June 15, coupled with a spike in Covid-19 cases, a travel advisory warning from the U.S, Jamaica may not seem so attractive for foreigners… Not until 2023 according to past president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association Nicole Madden Greig.
