In order to reduce murders in Jamaica, one criminologist is calling for the power of remand as a short-term emergency tactic. While noting States of Public Emergency (SOPEs) have helped to reduce crime, the criminologist says it has interfered with the economic welfare of the country. Following the declaration of the latest SOPEs in St James and Clarendon, criminologist and security expert Dr Jason McKay says providing unique security without charge is necessary for short-term emergency measures in Jamaica.

While noting that Jamaica has seen a reduction in its homicide rates between 2017 and 2022 with the implementation of SOEs, Dr McKay says there are also challenges with the strategy because it has not been applied nationally. Watch the report:
