Jamaica recorded its highest COVID-19 positive cases in a day, since the pandemic, which was recorded on Friday, February. 5, 2021 at three hundred and twenty-eight (328).

This follows a week of triple-digit confirmed cases. The first 6-days of the month saw one thousand, three hundred and seven (1,307) cases being recorded, this compared to the previous week which saw a total of 7-hundred and seventy-four cases.

Opposition spokesperson on Health and Wellness, Dr. Morais Guy describes the surge, as an alarming situation.

Dr. Guy says the increase calls into question whether the more transmissible UK variant of the virus is being spread.

Meanwhile, Professor of Public Health, Epidemiology, and HIV-AIDS at the University West Indies, Mona, Dr. Peter Figueroa, explains how the increase may drive up hospitalization.

As of February 6, one hundred and forty-nine persons have been hospitalized, 10 are moderately ill and 15 are in critical condition
