On Saturday, December 11, some vendors in the Coronation Market in Downtown, Kingston said they are yet to experience any Christmas profits and sales remain slow and steady for the most part.
For one butcher the low sales at this time is not a result of persons being fearful of the coronavirus.
But as the pandemic disrupts the usual Christmas sales, scores of vendors are still feeling the effects of the recent heavy rains. The rains have devastated many crops such as sweet peppers and cabbages. Christmas treats like sorrel, gungo peas were on most stalls. However, not attracting many shoppers.
Another vendor says buyers are spending their money elsewhere, buying clothes instead of food items.
The government has been encouraging Jamaicans to avoid large gatherings during the Christmas festivities so as to limit the spread of the virus.
While the vendors expect the market to get busier, they are grateful as they bounce back from the devastating downturn in sales earlier this year.
Some vegetables remain scarce pushing their prices sky high ahead of the Christmas festivities.
