The issue of corruption in leadership has plagued various administrations over the years – leading to scrutiny and condemnation from the public. It is for this reason that attempts are being made by various Municipal Corporations to be more open in their undertakings. Portland Mayor Paul Thompson sought to address the issue.
“The Portland parish council is transparent because our system is not a one-man thing. One person doesn’t make a decision in the council. The decision is made by the Heads of Department so it is not about one man making the decision,” he added.
It is a view that is shared by PNP councilor for the Prospect division, Wayne Mckenzie, who says several audits have been carried out over the years.
“I have never heard of anything untowards coming…nothing that I have ever heard of with any negative trace to or relating to corruption.”
He says his only concern surrounds decisions related to contract work in the municipal corporation – and how it is governed by the political directorate.
“Sometimes they make the ruling not consistent with the qualification level of individuals. The interview might say one thing but they rule as they feel rather than the rule as the standard set.”
