The Education Ministry is seeking to both introduce and reinforce a number of protocols and programmes in the nation’s schools in an attempt to dissuade vulnerable youth from engaging in violent conflict.

A recent interview with Minister of Education Fayval Williams provided greater insight into the aspirations of the state.  As Jamaica continues to grapple with the issue of violence in schools, the Minister says there is a comprehensive approach being taken by her Ministry to curtail the problem. The approach includes heightened security in the institutions as well as education campaigns to encourage students to think before they act. 

Minister Williams says the “just medz it” campaign is slated to make a major impact on the nation’s children. According to the Minister, many students are from volatile communities and have been exposed to criminality. She says they often feel unsafe and are compelled to take weapons to school to protect themselves. Watch the report:
