According to the Kingston Mayor, Delroy Williams,  there has been a significant reduction he number of reported cases of abuse against homeless persons in the Kingston municipality. Williams says  several efforts have been made to protect those living on the streets.

“We have had no reports of abuse to members of the homeless population from about 7 months ago. We had some reports of persons who were being abused on the streets of the municipality, particularly in the Downtown area. We did make an appeal to those person who carry out these acts to desist and we believed that they heard and have listened.

Williams made the statement yesterday at a Christmas treat for homeless persons, held at the Marie Atkins Night Shelter.

The mayor says there are on going plans to further accommodate homeless persons in the area, especially because they are among the most vulnerable in the municipality. This includes a newly built walk-in shower that is opened to members of the homeless community and the construction of a new facility.
