King’s Counsel, Peter Champagnie, while reflecting on the untimely passing of Vanessa Kirkland, says the Government should seek to review how compensation is granted to persons wrongfully affected by actions of the state. The acknowledgment that 16-year-old Vanessa Kirkland’s shooting death was most unfortunate is not lost on King’s Counsel, Peter Champagne who, alongside Oswest Senior Smith, represented the police officers who shot her in 2012. 

Speaking to CVM LIVE on Thursday, Champagnie notes the family was awarded some 1.4 million dollars in 2017 for the death, however, he explains, the process needs an update. News that the officers were acquitted of manslaughter charges in the court of appeal on Monday, sent Kirkland’s mother down a stream of painful memories.
