Who cares? The decision by public and private sector organizations to boost workplace productivity by supporting workers care obligations is well supported. With all the factors contributing to the island’s productivity slugging behind other countries, Senior Director at the Jamaica Productivity Centre at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security Mikhail-Ann Urquhart says the sectors are now focused on supporting the workforce.

But, though he supports the policy, President of the Caribbean Importers Confederation, Wayne Chen urges caution noting likely, unintended consequences from the policies. Praising the implementation of the paternity leave, Chen says initiatives like these will foster more caring gestures, even among males. 

Meanwhile, Urquhart says some workers believe that the flexible work arrangements are implemented on a “one size fit all” basis, and have not been well received. This as they champion the call for more flexi-work initiatives as a pragmatic way to move forward.
