Following the World Health Organization’s declaration of Monkeypox becoming a global health concern, Jamaica confirmed a second case of the virus on Sunday. The virus was detected in a male who returned to the island from New York.
In an interview with CVM LIVE Monday, public health specialist Dr. Winston Davidson says monkeypox is not a pandemic, as the virus which was once transmitted to humans through close contact with animals, is now human to human. He explains the transition process of the virus. He notes approximately 70 countries so far have found cases of the virus, totalling at least 13,000. Dr. Davidson says the global health concern now calls for governments to implement and mobilize resources to contain the virus.
Dr. Davidson suggests that the government seek to provide vaccinations for at-risk groups, including those who are sexually active. He says the virus is not common to any particular sex or race. Watch the full report:
