When the topic of volatile communities is being discussed, August Town in St Andrew is almost always mentioned. The community has been under a Zone of Special Operations for the past three years, has not had a flare of violence since, and is finding myriad ways of engaging its youth, in an effort to maintain peace. 

The August Town native says she started the plum academy, during the COVID-19 pandemic, as she saw the need to engage youth. She says she started with helping students with their homework but now has a full fledge program that entails education and sports. Jones who was in the midst of the August Town Spelling Bee Championship sponsored by Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) and others, explains this is just one of the many projects being undertaken and is geared towards the cognitive development of youth in the community.  Watch the report:
