Another Gun Bust At Montego Bay Wharf

Another gun bust at the Freeport Wharf in Montego Bay, St. James is hinting at a seemingly extensive supply chain for illegal weapons into the country.

The lives of 25 Jamaicans were taken by gun violence at the weekend, several others have been injured.

Security expert George Overton says the demand for guns locally is high as they are the preferred weapons of criminals.

Additionally, Overton says the recent seizures at the Montego Bay Port speaks to the brazenness of organized networks  in using a legitimate channel to ship illegal guns.

This he says is a signal that internal investigations are needed at the port.

Also, tensions remain high in a number of communities gripped by violent flare ups. 

Noting that the United States will not necessarily pay special attention to what is leaving their ports, Overton says there should be a strengthened resolve to screen shipments.

According to National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang the police have been disrupting the inflow of illegal guns into the country.

Overton, while reiterating  that the recent gun busts  are  reflective of the local authorities’ ability to  prevent guns from reaching criminals says stronger laws are needed to tackle the  illegal shipments.
