Tributes continue to pour in for the late ambassador, Richard Bernal who passed away suddenly on Wednesday. The late ambassador collapsed while walking near his home in Norbrook, St Andrew.
Remembered as a giant of a man. He served Jamaica in several capacities. There has been an outpouring of tributes from both sides of the political aisle. Following the passing of professor, the Honourable Ambassador Richard l. Bernal, who died suddenly Wednesday evening.
Ambassador Bernal served variously as Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States and its representative to the Organisation of American States (OAS), Deputy Governor of The Bank of Jamaica, and latterly as Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of The West Indies responsible for Global Affairs.
In a release from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the PM said that Ambassador Bernal’s experience with Caricom institutions, international development financing institutions, and as an academic, demonstrated his commitment to the promotion of Jamaica’s role in the world.
The Prime Minister added that ambassador Bernal’s legacy will live on in the continued manifestation of Jamaica’s positive engagement with global partners and dexterous navigation of global issues.
Former Leader of the People’s National Party (PNP) Dr. Peter Phillips, in his tribute, stated that Jamaica had lost an exemplary citizen, and a devoted patriot, who committed his life to the upliftment of the Jamaican nation. Dr. Phillips further noted, beyond his evident patriotism, he was a true renaissance man living life in the 21st century.
The foundation of this exemplary career of public service rested on his prolific academic interests resulting in him authoring more than ten books and scores of articles in academic journals, newspapers and other popular publications.
