After being postponed last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Population and Housing Census is slated to begin on September 12. Among the raft of changes to the census act which will seek to capture new data, citizens will see the use of tablets and other technological tools to collect the relevant information.
On the heels of Prime Minister Andrew Holness urging Jamaicans to cooperate with census officers, Minister with responsibility for Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) Dr. Nigel Clarke has signed the census order and regulations for 2022.
The census, which will begin on September 13 through to December will heavily utilize technology in conducting interviews. Director General Carol Coy says there are several benefits to come from the incorporation.
Coy says the tablets used during the process will be redirected to aid in the educational development of students. Coy reminds Jamaicans that census information is used to create policies, for planning, and for administrative and research purposes. The use of technology in the upcoming census is part of the government’s effort to create a more digitized Jamaica.
