In keeping with the government’s mandate to preserve the environment, there will be support for proper maintenance and desilting in short order to reduce the likelihood of flooding and related destruction.
Minister of state in the office of the Prime Minister Homer Davis, and representatives from the national works agency and National Environmental Planning Agency toured a section of the Riley River in Lucea, Hanover to analyze the recurrent flooding crisis.
Mayor Sheridan Samuels says all options are on the table for flood mitigation.
He notes the funding to execute the project is readily available and says the removal of bamboo has already started.
In the meantime, Minister without Portfolio for Economic Growth and Job Creation, Matthew Samuda says there will be dialogue with National Environmental Planning Agency (NEPA) and the forestry department on the work.
He says this is also a means to prevent excessive spending by the Lucea municipality. More details here:
