Another victory for the Financial Investigations Division (FID) following a ruling by the Court of Appeal Friday. Andrew Hamilton, a Jamaican convicted on narcotics charges in the United States, who had over half-a-billion Jamaican dollars in assets forfeited to the crown, lost his bid to retain them.
Hamilton, Janet Grant and Paulette Higgins jointly filed an application to the Court of Appeal seeking ‘leave to appeal and a stay of execution’ through their legal counsel Ian Wilkinson Kc.
A panel of Judges Brooks, Williams and Foster-Pusey reviewed the matter and handed down a judgment.
The court document noted, “the application for permission to appeal being refused, the application for a stay of execution must also be refused. In short, the court orders the application for leave to appeal is refused, the application for a stay of execution is refused and for costs to the respondent to be agreed or taxed.
Financial Investigations Division’s Principal Director of Investigations, Keith Darien has welcomed the ruling noting the Financial Investigations Division will not relent in pursuing those in breach of the law.
