With Westmoreland experiencing one of the highest increases in homicide rates across the island, Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang says the police force and the government of Jamaica are focused on maintaining social order in the space.  Adding he is not against the “shoot to kill” approach if police are confronted by armed criminals.

Speaking at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the construction of the New Frome Police Station in Westmoreland, the minister says the parish is home to several known criminals who are out on bail, and responsible for countless murders. He notes, carrying an illegal firearm signal the intent to kill.

Adding the government plans to also clamp down on traffic breachers who can be considered a menace to national security.

Minister Chang says the Firearm Act can be seen as the first major piece of legislation that gives the police a tool to effectively reduce crime.  The act is designed to reprimand culprits with illegal firearms.
