The resort town of Negril, Westmoreland has been given a facelift with a 12-million dollar welcome sign.

During the unveiling, yesterday, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said the sign not only adds aesthetic value but creates a sense of ownership. A $12-million welcome sign, reflecting the ‘vibe’ of Negril.

In addition to enhancing the aesthetic of the resort town, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlet anticipates that the sign will act as a catalyst, attracting greater foot traffic to the area.  He says Negril has been making a significant contribution to Jamaica’s economic recovery; pulling in about one-third of the more than US$3 billion earned by the tourism sector so far, this year.

He says, as a result, the summer tourism season that has just ended, is the best the country has ever seen. The welcome sign features a lay-by and walkway, retaining wall and landscaping.

It also has solar lighting, which helps with its visibility at night and its sustainability.

Wade Mars, Executive Director of the Tourism Product Development Company Ltd (TPDCO), terms the sign, the jam-iconic photo experience.

The Tourism Product Development Company Ltd (TPDCO), has mapped out a programme to boost tourism within rural communities and add aesthetic appeal to destination areas using the jam-iconic photo experiences.
