INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM AT RISK AFTER CRISIS IN NICARAGUA – MAY 6, 2019

Months of social and political crisis in Nicaragua is posing a significant challenge for independent journalism in the country.

A report by a non governmental foundation titled “2018 year of repression against press freedom in  Nicaragua” states that there were 712 violations of press freedom between April and December.

The study expressed that Journalism has become such a high risk profession that one could be charged for breaking guidelines. This lead to two journalist being arrested in December, 2018 after criticizing the government.

The two were later charged with provocation and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts, which triggered protests by human rights and press freedom groups.
