Days ago the director-general of the world health organization had a simple message to countries on how to deal with the virus: ‘test, test, test’ Amid concerns from several quarters that Jamaica -now with 26 confirmed cases- has not been very aggressive in its testing. Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton disclosed Monday that in a few weeks rapid test kits would be available as the country is now in the fourth and most aggressive stage of the virus- community spread.

At Wednesday’s sitting of the parliament’s PAAC where the third supplementary estimates of expenditure for the 2019/2020 fiscal year were reviewed – officials from the ministry of health disclosed that half a billion dollars would be used to acquire medical equipment including 30 ventilators. Permanent Secretary Dunstan Bryan provided an update on whether test kits were among the items being procured.
