The United States, Panama, and Columbia have announced a 60-day campaign to thwart illegal migration through the Darien Gap. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Kamina Johnson Smith is appealing to Jamaicans who are intent on migrating illegally, to desist from doing so. Highlighting routes often traveled by Jamaicans illegally migrating, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator says there are also reports of children being taken on these dangerous journeys and left vulnerable to kidnapping, trafficking, and even death.
Senator Johnson Smith says the governments of Panama and the US are taking steps to heighten patrol and movement through these routes. She references the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency’s (PICA) rollout of e-passports that promises to increase travelers’ security.
